Blue zone trading system

"Blue Zone" trading.

"Blue Zone" trading.

In 4H and D1 timeframes I am trying the "Blue Zone" strategy -- perhaps someone has a better name for it! Looking for 3 SMA's, the 100, the 55 and the 34, to all move in the same direction. Enter when the price exceeds the 34SMA, and trailing stop on the 55SMA. If you get stopped out, re-enter when the price exceeds the 34 SMA.

It is hard to get all three moving in the same direction on both the 4h and D1. I see more trade setups on the 4h. Looking at the EUR/USD, the trades are long term and could give 200 pips.

I live with a woman named Blue so I immediately was interested in the Blue Zone Strategy. I will try this a few times and see what kind of results I come up with. I have never used so many sma's I am curious to see what kind of results I come up with.

2.mark, I suspect that throwing in another indicator, like the stochastic, will improve your results. The stoch will warn you about over-bought/sold conditions and also about divergences. It could keep you out of bad trades. Good luck.

rwstaats TRY SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO REALLY SEE SOMETHING, set SMA's 13 21 34 55 89 144 and 233 look at those 7 on your chart especially on the 1M.

Elijah, is there any reason you are using SMA instead of EMA? The SMA looks a little choppy to me, but maybe that's a good thing? Do you use this much?

This is pretty interesting. I'm going to try this out on my sim and respond later with my results.

Just having a look at longer term trading because I live in New Zealand and find the volatility a bit down during the daytime ( when I trade.) I'd like to set up overnight trades and so I set up a work-space and started with ANZ/NZD it's looking perfect to try this strategy out on. What SL would people advise?

I have found that when trading long term there are several things that seem to work for me. First try to determine if there is any pre - announced events that could effect the currencies that you are trading. If there is news I try to stay way from trading unless I am 80% sure I know which way the market is going to move, otherwise I mainly try to use the trading range for the previous week trading ranges. I use the SMA 200, SMA 50 and RSI.

Ken: I trade the D1 and 4H independently, and usually the 4H triggers first. And yes, some setups provide 200 pips over time!

bdwight1 - Did you advise on using stochastic alignment on the 15M and H1 for an entry point on a scalp trade?

Apiary Trader, I don't think of myself as a scalp trader so I won't give advice on that topic. There are several threads dealing with scalping and others with alignment strategies , best to check those out.

Still looking about for some volatility in the mornings but I guess the rest of the world is asleep zzzzzzzzz.

Depends on your definition of morning. lol.

I think Elijah uses those SMA's because they correlate to FIB #'s.

Elder Impulse System.

Table of Contents.

Elder Impulse System.

Introduction.

The Elder Impulse System was designed by Alexander Elder and featured in his book, Come Into My Trading Room . According to Elder, “the system identifies inflection points where a trend speeds up or slows down”. The Impulse System is based on two indicators, a 13-day exponential moving average and the MACD-Histogram. The moving average identifies the trend, while the MACD-Histogram measures momentum. As a result, the Impulse System combines trend following and momentum to identify tradable impulses. This unique indicator combination is color coded into the price bars for easy reference.

Calculation.

Green price bars show that the bulls are in control of both trend and momentum as both the 13-day EMA and MACD-Histogram are rising. A red price bar indicates that the bears have taken control because the 13-day EMA and MACD-Histogram are falling. A blue price bar indicates mixed technical signals, with neither buying nor selling pressure predominating.

The Elder Impulse System can be used across different timeframes, but trading should be in harmony with the bigger trend. Elder recommends setting your trading timeframe and then calling it intermediate. Multiply this intermediate timeframe by five to get your long-term timeframe. Traders using daily charts for an intermediate timeframe can simply move to weekly charts for a long-term timeframe. The choice is not as clear-cut for smaller or longer timeframes. A little judgment is required. Traders using 10-minute charts to chart their “intermediate” timeframe can use 60-minute charts for their “long-term” timeframe. Investors using weekly charts can base the bigger picture on monthly charts. Once the trading timeframe is decided, chartists can then use the longer timeframe to identify the bigger trend. This can even be accomplished using one chart. Chart 2 shows daily bars with the Elder Impulse System and the 65-day exponential moving average, which is five times the 13-day EMA. The long-term trend is considered up when SPY is above the 65 day EMA or when MACD (1,65,1) is positive.

Again, other methods for determining the weekly trend can be used instead of using the MACD(1,65,1) zero crossover on the daily chart. We will use that technique in this article to simplify the charts and discussion.

Entries and Exits.

A buy signal occurs when the long-term trend is deemed bullish and the Elder Impulse System turns bullish on the intermediate term trend. In other words, the weekly chart has to show a clear uptrend in order for a daily buy signal to be valid. Daily buy signals that happen when the weekly chart is not in a clear uptrend are ignored.

A sell signal occurs when the long-term trend is deemed bearish and the Elder Impulse System turns bearish on the intermediate term trend. For example, the weekly chart has to show a clear downtrend in order for a daily sell signal to be valid. Daily sell signals that happen when the weekly chart is not in a clear downtrend are ignored.

In the daily chart above, we are using the MACD(1,65,1) indicator to show us the weekly trend. If it is above zero, the weekly trend is up. If it is below zero, the weekly trend is down. Given that, then the first three green arrows on the chart show valid daily buy signals (i. e. new clusters of green daily bars). Note, however, that the first couple of red bars on the chart are NOT valid sell signals in this case because the weekly trend is still positive (according to the MACD we are using). The red arrow shows the first valid sell signal that happens after the weekly trend turns down. Similarly, the weekly trend must turn positive again before valid buy signals are given (as indicated by the last three green arrows on the chart).

Conclusions.

The Elder Impulse System is designed to catch relatively short price moves. Elder notes the following: “The Impulse System encourages you to enter cautiously but exit fast. This is the professional approach to trading, the total opposite of the amateur's style. Beginners jump into trades without thinking too much and take forever to get out, hoping and waiting for the market to turn their way.”

In addition to trading setups, the Elder Impulse System can be used to prevent bad trades by consulting it before entering a trade. Use the Impulse System to confirm bullish or bearish setups. Traders can ignore bullish setups when the Impulse System is not in full-blown bull mode (green bars) and ignore bearish signals when the system is not in full-blown bear mode (red bars). The impulse system can also be used to anticipate patterns or reversals. If you think a bull flag is taking shape or support from a Fibonacci retracement is near, the Impulse System can be used to identify a short-term reversal for confirmation.

Using With SharpCharts.

The Elder Impulse System can be accessed in SharpCharts by selecting “Elder Impulse System” for “Type” under “Chart Attributes”. Overlays and indicators can be added to see just how the Elder Impulse System works or to determine the longer trend. For example, an exponential moving average can be added as an overlay or MACD can be added as an indicator. Click here for a live example of the Elder Impulse System.
